Haikou West Coast Lsland Park(Hai Nan)

    Project Concept

As cities move beyond the era of large-scale demolition and reconstruction, urban renewal is increasingly shifting from grand interventions toward more nuanced and human-scale spaces—neighborhoods, pocket parks, and overlooked residual sites.

These “in-between” spaces are more than peripheral fragments of the city. They often contain latent value, waiting not for complete transformation, but for a thoughtful intervention that reveals their potential.

Hainan is defined by its tropical landscape and volcanic heritage. In northern Haikou, the lava landscape of the Volcanic Crater Park has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. The porous texture of basalt preserves the island’s primordial geological character, while traditional Li pottery reflects the warmth and cultural memory of the land through a simple, handcrafted language.

The playground takes these two local identities as its design inspiration.

The architectural language draws from the texture and mass of volcanic rock, combined with the soft, rounded contours of traditional pottery. The tower is wrapped in layers of overlapping, scale-like panels, referencing the stratified textures formed as volcanic rock cools and solidifies. Its overall volume evokes a large ceramic vessel gently shaped and lifted by the earth—solid, rounded, and grounded.

A warm reddish-brown palette, inspired by the color of volcanic soil, creates a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Framed by tropical vegetation and palm shadows, the structure takes on the character of an ancient artifact, quietly embedded in the landscape while holding the energy and laughter of contemporary play.

    Play Experience

The Wormhole Bridge forms a continuous, winding circulation route through the playground, connecting multiple play spaces into an interconnected journey. Children move through the passageways, choosing their own routes and discovering unexpected moments around each turn. Movement itself becomes an experience of exploration, curiosity, and discovery.

Terrain climbing elements and climbing structures create a three-dimensional environment for active play. Children use both hands and feet to climb, balance, and navigate different levels, developing physical coordination, strength, and spatial awareness while gaining a sense of accomplishment through overcoming challenges.

A dedicated sandpit provides younger children with a more open-ended and flexible play environment. Digging, piling, filling, and shaping transform simple sand and play tools into endless possibilities for creative exploration. Through hands-on interaction, children discover the joy of making, experimenting, and creating.
